Opinion Piece on Educational Equity
In a time of seemingly intractable polarities, the tragic gap of where we are and where we need to build more equity in education is closer than we think.
“We are here not only to transform the world, but also to be transformed.” - P. Palmer
I believe education is a deeply fundamental human right - our ability to learn, consider, invent, and understand is a powerful gift to society, all to create more meaning and joy in the human experience. From that truth, learning and teaching serve as continuous wheels, driving the progress of education.
Learning is one’s ability to understand, consider and improve - when turning together, advancing the cycle in the creation of knowledge. It is both interpersonal and relational, in that, there are times when the student leads, and others, where one learns most from another.
As the wheel of learning turns, so does that of teaching. Teaching is the ability to comprehensively learn a subject, craft curriculum and provide impactful instruction with students. Within teaching, there exists a balance - both for the individual and the collective - of mastery of scholarly work alongside dedication to sharing that knowledge with students. When found in harmony, a teacher emerges as an educational leader, pursuing opportunities to guide long-term advancements in educational communities.
Educational leadership is vast and deep - a journey of both transformational and at times, organizational skills. The transformational accomplishments bring educational communities steps forward - a breakthrough in research, a highly successful school year, or launching an innovative new curriculum that resonated with students. These are the earned moments - they are also actionable moments, driving the necessary improvement in scholarly and equally, educational community betterment.
Additionally, there exists real value in organizational leadership - the ability to use public investment in education effectively; articulate the outcomes of the educational community in quantitative and qualitative terms; as well as the ability guide change management within complex organizational and societal models.
On all levels, scholarly, teaching, and leadership, we are bound to an ethical commitment: Do what’s best for the student.
